New products challenge the game-console hegemony

BlueStacks has introduced its GamePop console and subscription service, which allows Android games to be played on a television screen using an Android smartphone, an iPhone or its gamepad as the controller. The GamePop joins another Android-based console, the Ouya, and other new products in presenting a competitive challenge to the Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony triumvirate, Darrell Etherington notes. "[T]hese and a slew of other devices including the GameStick, smart TVs from manufacturers, Steam Boxes and even Google and Apple hardware are eating away at what was once a fairly exclusive field," he writes.
