N.Y. presses smartphone makers on curbing thefts

New York state's attorney general has asked four leading smartphone makers to explain what they are doing to prevent their devices from being stolen and traded on the black market. Eric Schneiderman wrote to Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics on May 10 asking why they cannot "render stolen devices inoperable and thereby eliminate the expanding black market on which they are sold." Police reported a 40% rise in reports of Apple product thefts in the first nine months of last year compared with figures posted in 2011.
