Wal-Mart reaches settlement with Justice Department

Wal-Mart has agreed to pay a fine of $3.1 million for violating the Clean Water Act at 24 sites in nine states, the Justice Department said. The retailer's second fine in three years related to storm-water runoff; the Justice Department said the company and its contractors failed to take several steps designed to prevent storm-water runoff from contaminating some lakes, streams and other bodies of water. A spokesman for Wal-Mart said, "We appreciate the government's focus on the environment and feel confident that the agreement we reached with the EPA will strengthen environmental compliance nationwide."
