Companies prepare for massive security screening effort

Tens of millions of pieces of merchandise will be screened by hundreds of companies in one of the nation's most expensive and far-reaching aviation security initiatives since Sept. 11, 2001. Officials are phasing in a program under which, by 2010, all cargo must be screened before being loaded onto U.S. passenger carriers. Screening will be performed before the merchandise reaches airport facilities by companies in the supply chain, rather than TSA, with the aid of bomb-detection machines.
