Speakers at the 55th annual Choice Hotels International convention discussed the need to boost the profile of the hotel industry in the national consciousness and to address issues including the Employee Free Choice Act. Joe McInerney, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, said any compromise on the act will not be acceptable if it includes removing the secret ballot, or allowing arbitration or fining the hotel but not the union for a contract breach. "The idea is to kill it and come up with an alternative," he said. "We don't want to be fighting this every year."
