Telefonica to invest $1.2 billion in Chinese telecoms

Telefonica will invest about $1.16 billion into a pair of Chinese telecoms, China Netcom and China Unicom, which are due to merge under the country's industry-restructuring plan, the Spanish company said today. Following the deal, Telefonica will own 5.5% of the newly merged entity and become the government-owned company's largest private shareholder, the telecom said.
