Setting your lawn mower at 2½ inches or more provides benefits because tall grass grows more slowly, reducing water and fertilizer needs, writes Jeff Ball. Higher grass also reduces weeds and problems with disease and insects. One of the easiest ways to ensure a mower is at 2½ inches is to park it on a sidewalk or driveway and measure from the bottom edge of the mower to the ground, he notes.
