OCR pledges tougher enforcement of health privacy rules

The Office of Civil Rights said health care plans, providers and other covered entities under HIPAA can expect stricter enforcement and as much as $1.5 million in fines for each violation. The enforcement program is expected to "infuse consumer confidence to put their information into electronic health records and to advance sharing this information in order to improve the quality of health care and the efficiency that the industry needs," an agency official said.
