Seabrook nuclear plant operates safely, NRC maintains

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission hasn't changed its stance about the safe operation of NextEra Energy's Seabrook nuclear plant in New Hampshire despite new data from opponents of the facility's relicensing. Critics say the utility in its relicensing request downplayed potential radiation levels should an accident occur at the site. "The NRC staff concludes that the seismic PRA [probable risk assessment] model [supplied by NextEra], in combination with the use of a seismic events multiplier of 2.1, provides an acceptable basis for identifying and evaluating the benefits of SAMAs [severe accident mitigation alternatives]," a report stated.
