U.S. retailers go their own way on Bangladesh safety efforts

Wal-Mart announced a commitment to contract with an outside auditor to inspect 279 Bangladesh factories, publish the results on its website by June 1 and require factory owners to make repairs or risk losing its business. The commitment comes after Wal-Mart declined to join a legally binding five-year safety accord signed by several major European retailers. Also on Tuesday, retail trade groups including NRF met to discuss a possible accord among North American retailers.
