Colo. initiative promotes 9 early-literacy programs

The Mile High United Way in Colorado is managing nine early-literacy programs that target students from ages 2 to 8. The five-year Early Literacy Social Innovation Fund uses a combination of federal grants and local donations to examine the effectiveness of programs -- such as after-school tutoring, summer reading camps, word pedometers and those teaching parents to engage with their students -- and whether the programs help more students read by third grade.
