Income gap follows women into retirement

Women, who earn and save less on average than men in their lifetimes, are more than twice as likely as men to live below the poverty line in retirement, Melanie Hicken writes. In addition to earning a lower average wage, women are more likely to work part time in jobs that may not include retirement benefits or leave the workforce to care for children or family members, setting the stage for lower retirement benefits.
