Research examines texting habits among clinicians

A study in Telemedicine and e-Health found 12% of physicians sent or received work-related text messages more than 10 times per shift, while 53% texted about work during their time off. Researchers also found 46% were wary of privacy issues tied to texting and 30% have received protected health information in a text message. "Without proper safeguards in place, there is a concern of violating HIPAA ... hospitals should be evaluating the implementation of secure systems for this type of communication," researchers wrote.
