Building statewide school data systems a daunting task

Many states have found that creating a giant database that tracks student attendance, test scores and other information can be exceedingly complex and expensive. North Carolina's statewide school computer system, which many teachers find error- and crash-prone, is millions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule.
