Baggage system, people mover push airport costs higher in Miami

Airport officials in Miami are seeking another $64 million for baggage handling equipment and an automated people mover in the new North Terminal, where costs have already spiraled from $975 million to nearly $2.9 billion. Local lawmakers worry the cost overruns could push airline fees as high as $34 per passenger, compared with just $5.45 at nearby Fort Lauderdale airport. If airlines balk at the high costs and reduce flights to Miami, the city could see its bond rating lowered.
