Democratic lawmakers criticize FDA oversight of imported devices

While Democrats say the FDA is short on funds and authority to regulate imported medical devices, one Republican, Rep. Joe Barton from Texas, says imported devices have not been problematic. "We've had major problems with food imports from China, we've had major problems with drug imports from China, but I'm not aware that we've had major problems with medical device imports from China," he said. Legislation has been proposed that would require manufacturers to register with the agency and pay for mandatory inspections of foreign facilities.
