Improve science teacher pay to attract qualified candidates

Data indicates that students with science degrees can earn thousands of dollars more annually by opting to go into fields other than teaching, writes Gerald F. Wheeler, the executive director of the National Science Teachers Association. Perhaps that's why nearly half of high school biology students and roughly two-thirds of chemistry and physics students are taught by teachers without majors or certification in the relevant field, he writes.
