Price hikes spur consideration of alternative jet fuels

With jet fuel prices skyrocketing and greenhouse gas emissions a continuing concern, the airline industry is seeking alternative sources for high-density, high-octane fuel that is capable of withstanding freezing temperatures and is consistent worldwide. Virgin has already tested a 5% coconut-oil biofuel that used 150,000 coconuts to power the flight from London to Amsterdam, while others are looking at jatropha and algae as possible biofuel sources.
