Auto layoffs drive spike in U.S. unemployment claims

Accelerating job losses in the auto industry pushed up initial claims for unemployment benefits last week, the U.S. Labor Department said. In the week that ended Saturday, 637,000 people submitted first-time claims, up from the previous week's 605,000. The number of people continuing benefits hit a record high for the 15th consecutive week.
