Buildings at risk must be seismically retrofitted, N.Z. experts say

Builders and building owners in New Zealand are being encouraged to seismically retrofit existing structures to meet the current building codes and enable such buildings to withstand the damaging effects of earthquakes. Techniques such as sheathing columns with lightweight membranes, using steel to connect columns and beams and pinning walls to columns are among the cost-effective solutions that can be used.
