NAB chief: Broadcasters pay for spectrum with public service

NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith, during an appearance at a Senate panel hearing on video, defended Fox's stance that it could shift its programming to cable if streaming service Aereo is allowed to continue. "I think [Fox] is simply saying we are not going to sit still for piracy," he said. Smith also brushed back a claim by Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., that broadcasters had gotten their spectrum for free. On the contrary, broadcasters pay for spectrum by providing local news, sports, weather and emergency information "that is literally a lifeline in either man-made or natural disasters," Smith said.
