Senate may vote on farm bill before Memorial Day

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry voted 15-5 to approve a $955 billion farm bill Tuesday that would save about $23 billion over the next decade by eliminating or consolidating some programs and trimming others, including a $400 million cut from the food stamp program and the halt of payments to farmers and farmland owners. The Senate may vote on the bill as early as next week, and the House is expected to vote on its farm bill next month.
