IBM says new thermoset polymer material is stronger than bone, recyclable

Researchers at IBM have discovered a new thermoset polymer material that they say is more durable than bone, inexpensive, can be recycled and can heal itself. Thermosets are already used in materials such as plastic bottles, paints and food packages, but they tend to wear or break under pressure. The new, stronger thermoset polymers could be used in manufacturing industries such as automotive, airline and semiconductors, researchers say. "We are getting closer to materials that are like metal, but they're much more lightweight," said IBM scientist Jeannette Garcia, who discovered the new polymer.
