Reflective roofs help Ore. buildings become more energy efficient

White roofs are becoming more widespread in Portland, Ore., as they help buildings save on energy costs. Cool roofs can reduce energy needs for air conditioning by 5% to 10% on sloped roofs, and 20% on flat ones, said Kurt Shickman, executive director of the Global Cool Cities Alliance. They also help maximize the performance of solar panels.
