Obituary: Larry McKeon, 63, Illinois' first out lawmaker

Former Illinois state Rep. Larry McKeon, who in 1996 became the state's first out elected official, died Tuesday in Chicago. He was 63. "He may have gone in there as the first openly gay state legislator but he is leaving as a very good legislator who happened to be gay," state Rep. John Fritchey, D-Chicago, said when McKeon announced his retirement in 2006.
