A program in New Orleans has at-risk students learning job skills operating a restaurant as they work to earn their GEDs. The Cafe Hope program has students spending half a day in school and the other half staffing the restaurant, where they learn front-of-the-house skills in addition to working in the kitchen. Students get paid for their work, and those who earn their GED while in the program receive a $250 bonus and help in finding a job.
