Improving young students' vocabulary skills

Improving elementary-school students' vocabulary skills is a slow process, says third-grade teacher Gaetan Pappalardo. To improve vocabulary, he suggests teachers read aloud to students, engage students in reading and writing conferences and assign poetry. He also suggests avoiding vocabulary quizzes and worksheets, which attempt to force learning.
