Teaching American history through project-based learning

An Alabama high school recently took a group of fourth-graders on a tour of American history as they donned period costumes and played the roles of historical figures from colonial times to the present. The students were participating in the American Experience project, a yearlong curriculum developed by the school's English and history departments that for five years will take the place of the history or graduation portions of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.
