Precast panels and columns of ultra-high strength concrete are being used by engineers at Iowa State University to design taller wind turbines to better withstand stresses. If successful, the concrete turbines would be easier to ship and last longer than their steel counterparts, said Sri Sritharan, an engineering professor at the university. "The main advantage with the precast concrete tower design that we came up with was the transportation benefits," said Grant Schmitz, university engineering graduate student.
