Robot keeps an eye, ears on the elderly

A mobile robot with a tablet-screen face follows 94-year-old Lea Mina Ralli around her house in Rome as part of a project funded by the EU. The system is part of an experiment aimed at reducing the cost of caring for Europe's rapidly growing population of elderly. The setup in Ralli's home includes strategically placed sensors that monitor her vital signs and activity and can alert caregivers to any anomalies.
