Bridge accident mystifies investigators

After a 40-ton steel girder from a bridge under construction crashed onto Interstate-70 near Denver on Saturday, crushing a car, and investigators are trying to figure out what had caused it to twist out of position, the inquiry into which could take up to a year. "We had no reason to believe this could occur," said state transportation spokeswoman Stacey Stegman, and the agency's engineer on the site "believed that the contractors met their requirements." The contractor, Asphalt Specialties, has worked on several bridges in the region, and a CDOT engineer said the company does "very high-quality work."
