$1.5B in transportation grants for "shovel ready" projects only

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood proposed rules last week for disbursing $1.5 billion in a new grant program for transportation projects. The grants will require "shovel ready" status for projects, which could limit the amount of aid available to needy areas without projects already planned. The grants would be available in amounts ranging from $20 million to $300 million for improvements to roads, bridges, ports and transit.
