European worries negate upbeat U.S. retail sales figures

Markets were helped Friday by reports showing that U.S. retail sales rose in April and that improved consumer spending may be offsetting problems in the housing market. The upbeat news was, however, tempered by more concerns over European broad markets that started with the Greek debt crisis. The benchmark Dow Jones industrial average closed down 1.51% on Friday.
