High court scraps life terms for most young offenders

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled underage offenders can only receive life sentences without the possibility of parole in homicide cases. The justices ruled 5-4 that life sentences were cruel and unusual in all other instances, with Justice Anthony Kennedy writing that juveniles "should not be deprived of the opportunity to achieve maturity of judgment and self-recognition of human worth and potential."
