Report: NFC near, but microSD slots are shaping a new approach

Near Field Communications, the wireless technology that promises to spur the growth of mobile contactless payments and other applications, could be only 12 months from becoming embedded into handsets, but under a different format than engineers had originally intended, according to an ABI Research report. The increase of cell phones with microSD slots combined with the lack of NFC-ready devices has shaped a new approach that ABI says will mean lesser core roles for carriers and phone makers.
