Replacement of Tappan Zee Bridge deck begins

A new Tappan Zee Bridge could cost $16 billion -- money that is not available except perhaps in the form of a public-private partnership. That means the 56-year-old deck of the bridge across the Hudson River in New York will be replaced instead -- with concrete and steel, that could extend its life by up to 20 years -- at a cost of $149 million.
