Sugar beet growers fear CAFTA-DR, future deals

A pending trade agreement between the U.S., the Dominican Republic and several Central American countries will not significantly impact U.S. sugar producers, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says, but sugar beat growers say the pact could set a precedent, setting up future trade agreements with other sugar producing countries who would demand access to the U.S. market. Idaho sugar beat growers have won the support of Gov. Dirk Kempthorne, the state's Republican congressional delegation, and a farm lobby group.
