Demand for shelters for LGBT youth still exceeds supply

Although more than 25 homeless shelters for LGBT youth have opened nationwide, the demand for such services far exceeds the supply, with research estimating 20% of the urban homeless population under 21 is gay. While some are lobbying Congress for additional LGBT youth-specific funding, others believe gay-specific training and services need to be added to shelters for the general population, especially those in suburban areas.
