Use of recycled tires in artificial turf raises concerns

Artificial turf offers year-round durability, but some are concerned over the ground-up rubber tires used as fill to provide a cushion beneath the synthetic grass. Recycled tires can contain toxic chemicals such as benzene, butadiene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. "The crumb rubber that's used in many fills [is] safe," said Shira Miller, a spokeswoman for the Synthetic Turf Council.
