Construction of Purple Line in Md. to be delayed; cost estimate surges

Construction of the 16-mile light-rail line in the Washington, D.C., suburbs between Bethesda and New Carrollton, Md., won't start until 2015. The $1.5 billion project is now estimated to cost more than $1.9 billion because the application process for federal funding has been more time-consuming than anticipated, and the costs had to be revised to account for inflation, according to the Maryland Transit Administration. The opening date could be pushed back to 2020.
