Vehicle makers are looking to explore applications for bio-based plastics even while seeking to use new sourcing to develop traditional plastics. "We don't want to sacrifice quality and safety, so we have to find applications where it will work," said Mark Bacchus, a Toyota organic material application engineering official in Michigan. Bacchus also noted the role of automotive suppliers in promoting innovation in bio-based resins. "We only have so many eyes and ears to look into technology. We rely on the [suppliers] to do a lot of legwork, too," he said.
