"Survival" journals engage Mich. fifth-grade students in writing

Brett Fidler is teaching students at Fancher Elementary School in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., about descriptive, detailed writing by assigning them to write daily in a "survival" journal. Using Jack London stories as inspiration and the school's reading theme of "Give it All You've Got," students are given a map and a set of circumstances of being dropped off in the wilderness, and then turn in daily passages about their trek back to safety.
