New Publix store to anchor development in Ala. food desert

Publix Super Markets will build a new store in downtown Birmingham, Ala., that will anchor a $30 million mixed-use development. The 30,000-square-foot store will feature a full-service pharmacy and is expected to be completed by 2016. "This project is an exciting step to enhancing the area's amenities and a start to addressing the food desert issue in our city. To have Publix be a part of the city center is a wonderful addition and we cannot wait to get this project started," Birmingham Mayor William Bell said.
