Editorials: FDA needs funding to improve public health

The FDA has finally admitted its need for additional funding after Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach sent a letter to Congress asking for as much as $275 million to protect the safety of drugs, devices and food imports, according to editorials in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Congress should approve the budget increase, which is aimed at boosting inspections and opening more offices overseas, to equip the FDA with necessary tools to ensure public health and safety, the editorials say.
