Safety compliance issue puts American, FAA at odds

American Airlines and the FAA are at odds over a safety compliance issue that led to thousands of flight cancellations last month. American reported that the FAA granted the carrier time to gradually complete wiring maintenance, but then backtracked. The FAA contends that officials never implied that American could complete the repairs without disrupting its schedule. The DOT, which made the reports public last week, said the FAA and airlines should work together to eliminate any misunderstanding of compliance directives to avoid similar disruptions in the future.
