First ground simulator dates back to World War I

Ground simulators were developed during World War I to help train pilots to fire machine guns. Curtiss-Wright manufactured the first complete flight simulator with a fully-functional cockpit for Pan America. The use of digital computers was introduced to flight simulators in the 1960s, and today's models now offer comprehensive aerodynamic and systems modeling.
