A group of students with autism and other developmental disabilities in California's Oceanside community participated in a one-day surf camp; for many, it was their first experience with the sport. The children learned about safety, board balance and surfing techniques from the staff of a local surf school. The parent of one student said, "He loves the water. It's soothing for him. For kids with certain behaviors, you can really see the calming effect with activities like this. It helps them focus."
