Coast Guard to open hearings on grounding of Shell rig

The Coast Guard this week will hold marine casualty hearings about a Royal Dutch Shell drilling barge that ran aground off the Alaskan coast on Dec. 31, 2012. The rig was being towed to a shipyard in Seattle from Alaska's Aleutian Islands when the towline broke and the barge was cast adrift and ran aground. Shell was prompted to shelve Arctic drilling activities this year partly because of damage to the drilling barge.
