TTIP talks discuss potential of harmonized chemical classification, labeling

The U.S. and Europe may not be able to harmonize their chemical regulatory schemes, but there is "great potential" for aligning both regions' chemical classification and labeling with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, the European Commission said in two position papers released May 14. Such a move could lead to harmonized U.S.-EU chemical classifications, the papers indicated. The American Chemistry Council "supports further work on classification and labeling, including reducing or eliminating the need for dual classifications."
