National Research Council Backs Heavier Trucks On Roads

Researchers reportedly say trucks weighing 90,000 pounds -- 10,000 more than the current limit -- should be allowed on roads because they can carry more goods at a lower cost. The NRC also supports opening roads to tandem trucks pulling two 33-feet trailers, compared with the 28-foot trailers now permitted. A highway safety advocacy group opposes the recommendations.
